Background of the Study
Political defamation has become a prevalent strategy in electoral contests, with candidates using false or misleading information to tarnish opponents' reputations. The rise of digital media has amplified defamation cases, making it easier for misinformation to spread rapidly and influence voter perceptions (Eze & Okonkwo, 2024). In Nigeria, defamation lawsuits have been filed against political figures, yet their actual impact on electoral outcomes remains debated.
Numan Local Government Area, Adamawa State, has witnessed cases of political defamation, particularly during election seasons. This study aims to assess the extent to which political defamation influences candidates' electoral prospects in Numan LGA and whether defamation lawsuits affect voters' confidence in candidates.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the legal consequences of political defamation, it remains a potent tool for discrediting opponents. However, little research has been conducted on its direct impact on voters' choices and candidates' success rates in Numan LGA. This study seeks to bridge that gap.
